What is 802.11?

802.11 and its variants are technical standards which govern the internal workings of the Wireless LAN hardware. These standards specify features such as frequency, transmit power, data encoding and decoding. These standards ensure that you can mix and match any manufacturers products and they will work with everyone else’s as long as it’s the same standard.

802.11 devices specifically operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency range and provide a data capacity of 1 to 2 Mbps. The radio link uses either frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) or direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) as their modulation schemes. The other variants are extensions to the 802.11 standard offering higher data rates and using different frequency bands.

Do you require a special licence to operate a wireless LAN?

Wireless LANs operate in frequency bands that do not require a licence. This means that all the devices that would make up a WLAN are exempt from licensing in the same way that your cordless phone at home is exempt.

Are there any Heath & Safety issues involved with Wireless LANs?
